This one was similar to the Spider Book, because at one level it was simply a reference book about real birds (all woodpeckers) you might see in the real woods where this game was held – simple words, short sentences, mostly pictures, like any “birds of the area” book would be.
But if you read the whole book closely (about 10 pages), you would discover a section at the end that explains about the “Unusual History of the Traveler’s Stones” and some deciphered encoded messages that ancient travelers would use to communicate with each other …. a little more reading and you could figure it out that if you followed the clues in the book about how to recognize and find those stones, you might find a treasure!
No one ever did, though …. disappointed me quite a bit …. the book sat in the library for a year until someone finally expressed the tiniest bit of interest in it and asked for help with it, so I helped them find the treasure. We had a nice visit as we walked along the trail, so that part was fun.
